Alexandra Bruehl, L.Ac., Dipl.OM (she/her), founder and owner Color image of Alex Bruehl, L.Ac. with her dog, surrounded by plants. Plagued by stabbing migraines since my teens, I was thrilled to discover medicine for them in my 20s. But when my miracle pills started giving me strange and uncomfortable side effects, I looked for a different solution. I stumbled upon acupuncture and, to my delight, I was able to greatly decrease the frequency and severity of my headaches. My love for Asian Medicine was born. Throughout my studies and practice, I came to understand that physical and mental pain—headaches, anxiety, menstrual cramps, an aching back—are signals the body sends to slow us down because we’re overdoing it. We have a tendency to ignore or cover up pain via a pill, heating pad, a few margaritas. But those methods just mute the signal; they don’t solve the problem. Asian Medicine drew me in because it seeks to treat the pain by finding its root cause and eliminating it, thereby restoring balance to the body. It’s not about covering up aches and pains, it’s about healing the mind and body to prevent their return. After practicing for several years, I took a continuing education class on Functional Medicine and was again hooked. While I very much appreciate that acupuncture is somewhat of a “black box” practice, in that no one really knows how it works, Functional Medicine takes you deep inside (via lab tests) the physiological processes that can have profound effects one’s sense of wellbeing—all while also emphasizing the treatment of root causes of disease. Growing up as a pretty big Biology nerd, this struck me as the best of both worlds. I was born to German and Peruvian parents and speak pretty good Spanish and pretty terrible German. I’m a proud immigrant and strongly support immigrant rights. I’m committed to doing what I can to uplift immigrants, BIPOC communities, LGBTQIA+, and people with disabilities. When I'm not acupuncting, you'll find me doing pottery, spending time outside in the sun, camping, going to movies and concerts (in non-pandemic times), and playing with Louise, the family dog. I am also a cat lady. And a basically-any-animal lady. I’m a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist with a Masters degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Dongguk University in Los Angeles. I earned a Bachelors degree in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Michigan and a Masters degree and PhD candidacy in Medical Anthropology from Emory University. I have completed a year-long mentorship with Dr. Yvonne Farrell on the treatment of psychoemotional disorders in Asian Medicine as well as a year-long Functional Medicine mentorship with Dr. Daniel Kalish at the Kalish Institute of Functional Medicine. Acupuncturist and healer Abdi Assadi says that, “a healer is someone who helps people remember their true nature.” I love this quote because it resonates and I’m so grateful that I get to be involved in this work.
